Polaris Tech Charter School rising up in Ridgeland as roof, walls, tower are built.

Every week the view changes at Polaris Tech Charter School in Ridgeland. Where once an abandoned hospital stood, now a new facility rises for middle and high school students from across the Lowcountry.

Crews built the school's central tower and began framing in walls and the courtyard. Weather pennitting, the full roof should be installed in coming days to allow interior work Lo begin. The school is scheduled Lo open in mid-August to approximately 280 students in grades 6-10.

"When you look at it every day, sometimes the progress seems slow, but if you drive by once a week, it's pretly dramatic how fast this school is going up," said Dr. William Singleton, a founding member of Polaris Tech Charter School and a former superintendent of the Jasper County public schools.

"We are entering a crucial period where we have to get the roof and walls in place so the crews can start working on the inside," he said.

The Phase One, 28,000-square fool facility will house classrooms, learning labs and administrative space. Future constrnction will provide additional space for teaching and learning, as well as for the various career pathways.

Polaris Tech is a state-approved charter school to serve middle and high school students from Jasper Councy and the Lowcounlry. II is a free school (no tuition), that will focus on preparing young people for successful work and college.

The Polaris Tech academic emphasis will be on six career areas: Aerospace, Health Science, Information Technology, Logistics, Advanced Manufacturing, and Business Management. Polaris Tech will serve students in grades 6-10 for the school year starting in August, then add 11th grade the following year and, in 2020-21, will graduate its first senior class. 

Io April, school leaders conducted a random lollery for enrollment because more students applied than there is classroom space available. Enrollment fom1s are due May 6; after that date, students on wait lists for various grades may be offered enrollment at Polaris Tech on a space­available basis.
