Polaris Tech’s popularity and promise to the young people of Jasper County helped sway the S.C. State Charter School Board of Trustees to increase Polaris Tech’s opening enrollment to 280 students in grades 6-10.
The increase to 280 students from the previous 230 enrollment will enable more students to join the new state charter school, scheduled to open in mid-August in Ridgeland, SC. Utilities are being roughed in and the concrete foundation poured in preparation for the exterior to rise up in coming weeks.
Student applications are being accepted online at www.polaristech.org through March 31, 2018.
If more applications are received for each grade than there are seats available, a random lottery will be conducted to determine who is offered enrollment. By charter, 20 percent of the 280 seats are set aside for Founding Families and children of Polaris Tech employees. Siblings of applicants also get preference in the lottery.
“We have been encouraged and humbled by the groundswell of interest in Polaris Tech,” said Dr. William Singleton, a retired superintendent of Jasper County Schools and Polaris Tech founder.
“It is clear that our approaches to teaching and learning, and our emphasis on career pathways and college prep, are hitting home with parents. It’s an exciting time for all of us involved in Jasper County,” he said.
Polaris Tech is a state-approved charter school to serve middle and high school students from Jasper County and the Lowcountry. It is a free school (no tuition). The Polaris Tech academic emphasis will be on six career areas: Aerospace, Health Science, Information Technology, Logistics, Advanced Manufacturing, and Business Management.
Community information sessions are scheduled for Saturday, March 17, from 10-11:30 at Ridgeland Baptist Church on Grays Highway, and March 24 at the Hardeeville Library from 11-12:30. Both sessions will include hands-on demonstrations of project-based learning as well as the health and wellness element.
