Polaris Tech roof complete, interior drywall starts as new school continues on schedule

With the roof and walls in place and drywalling starting, Polaris Tech Charter School in Ridgeland, SC, is back on schedule after delays caused by heavy rains in late May.

“Getting the full building shelled in, including the roof and steel walls, is a major milestone because that allows our crews to start work on the more detailed interior work,” said Sandra Chavez, chair of the Polaris Tech Planning Committee.

“It took some long days and weekends, but our contractor has our project on schedule to open in August,” she said.

Polaris Tech is a state-approved charter school to serve middle and high school students from Jasper County and the Lowcountry. It is a free school (no tuition), that will focus on preparing young people for successful work and college.

“I am excited to see our progress continue, and it’s going to be non-stop work and progress from now through August to get our school ready and open,” said Dr. William Singleton, a former Jasper County School District superintendent and founding member of Polaris Tech.

“While the crews are busy building the physical school, our team is very busy building the curriculum and staff that will take care of business inside the school,” he said.

Dr. Melissa Crosby, most recently principal of Colleton County High School and New Cougar Tech, is executive director for Polaris Tech.

The Polaris Tech academic emphasis will be on six career areas: Aerospace, Health Science, Information Technology, Logistics, Advanced Manufacturing, and Business Management. Polaris Tech will serve students in grades 6-10 for the school year starting in August, then add 11th grade the following year and, in 2020-21, will graduate its first senior class.

The Phase One, 28,000-square foot facility now under construction will house classrooms, learning labs and administrative space. Phase Two, several years away, will provide additional space for teaching and learning, as well as for the various career pathways.

School leaders are finalizing enrollment this month for about 280 students in grades 6-10. The teaching staff is almost complete as well.
