Candidates sought for Polaris Tech Board of Directors

Residents interested in helping Polaris Tech Charter School in Ridgeland grow and improve are invited to become candidates for the Board of Directors. The deadline for applications is April 9 and the online election will be held April 24-25.

Board members serve two year terms. There are five seats open, three through the election and two to be appointed by the current 11-member Board of Directors.

Polaris Tech is a state-approved charter school serving middle and high school students from Jasper County and the Lowcountry. It is a free school (no tuition), that focuses on preparing young people for successful work and college.

The Polaris Tech academic emphasis will be on six career areas, starting with: Aerospace, Health Sciences and Business Management. Polaris Tech is accepting student applications for the 2019-2020 school year for students who will be in grades 6-11. Applications and details about the election process are available online at www.polaristech.org.

The newly-constructed school is located on Grays Highway across from the Ridgeland Airport and serves about 240 students in grades 6-10 now; next school year, eleventh grade will be added, and in 2020-21 Polaris Tech will have its first graduates when it serves grades 6-12.

To ensure a fair and confidential nomination and election, Polaris Tech Charter School has contracted with the Public Charter School Alliance of South Carolina to oversee the board election process.

Polaris Tech seeks a diverse board with the knowledge and skills needed to govern a public charter school.  By law, at least half the board must have experience in business or education and all board members must be South Carolina residents.

The Polaris Tech Governance & Nomination Committee will select a slate of three candidates to appear on the ballot. All prospective candidates must complete the official Polaris Tech board application on the Polaris Tech website: https://pcsasc.memberclicks.net/index.php?option=com_mc&view=mc&mcid=form_261251

Applications must be completed and submitted online no later than April 9, 2019 at 8 PM.  Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. By April 12, a slate of candidates with profile information will be posted on the Polaris Tech website.
