Polaris Tech, a new college- and career-focused state charter school in Jasper County scheduled to open in 13 months, will be located in a 35,000 square-foot facility in Ridgeland, organizers announced today. “We are thrilled at this news. It’s a big step for Polaris Tech and Jasper County to have a site near the center of the county,” said retired four-star Air Force General Lloyd “Fig” Newton, a founding member of the Polaris Tech Charter School Committee and Jasper County native.

Polaris Tech Charter School is on its way to reality after earning approval from the State Public Charter School District Board during a hearing in Columbia Thursday, May 11.

“On this last day of our application cycle, it is clear that education and community leaders are stepping up like never before to create high quality, innovative charter schools in the state of South Carolina", Elliot Smalley, SCPCSD Superintendent.

“The (Polaris) Charter Committee represents an impressive group of individuals who are all clearly committed to providing high-quality school options to the students of the Lowcountry, and the proposed school is rooted in a clearly identified need for additional career technology education options,” the S.C. Public Charter School District review team wrote in recommending the approval.

Polaris Tech Charter School is on hold for 60 days to allow the steering committee to address questions raised during a hearing today with the State Public Charter School District Board.

“We appreciate all the families and community leaders who came to us and enthusiastically endorsed our ideas for improving career education opportunities in Jasper County and the Lowcountry,” retired Gen. Lloyd “Fig” Newton, a member of the Polaris steering committee and native son of Jasper County, said in the release. “This region is poised for tremendous economic growth, and we need to start right now to prepare our population for those jobs. Polaris Tech is part of that answer.”
